Louise Ho, Paris-based

After recently moving from Shanghai to Paris, in addition to dealing with many new cultural differences, I now have my biggest challenge yet: finding an ideal obstetrics-gynecologist.

I was about five months pregnant by the time I landed in Paris, so the hunt was rather time-crucial. Fortunately, I had my French sister-in-law, who has given birth to two daughters in Paris, to help. She introduced me to an experienced ob-gyn and the same private clinic she used.

During my first trimester I went to Shanghai First Maternity And Infant Hospital on Changle Road, then a private American clinic for my second trimester. After my first appointment in Paris during my third trimester, however, I realized that maternity checks in Paris are nothing like what I experienced back in Shanghai.

In France, you must wait literally for weeks and even an entire month, like me, just to get an appointment. Shanghai claims a far bigger population than Paris, and the number of pregnant local women is also on the rise due to China's new two-child policy, and yet in Shanghai I can get a same-day or next-day appointment whenever I want.

My first appointment with a Parisian doctor was not at all what I expected. There was no nurse to help; he did everything himself, including listening to the baby's heartbeat and checking my cervix.

Et voila! In a matter of minutes I was finished. He said everything was fine, but I couldn't help but wondering about blood and urine tests or getting an ultrasound, which are all standard in China.

In France, a woman must get an ultrasound and blood tests at separate places and separate times. Here, I also have to meet my midwife in advance and meet my anesthesiologist beforehand. It's all quite complicated and time-consuming.

Even at public maternity hospitals in Shanghai, which do not allow much time to be spent on each expectant mother due to the high volume of daily patients, there is a clear examination plan. From 34 weeks onwards, you are supposed to do one maternity check every week until delivery. In Paris, I only get two maternity checks, one ultrasound check and one blood test.

France is in fact one of the best countries in the world for childbirth, and there is a stronger focus here on birth preparation. The meeting with my midwife, for example, was to teach me breathing and pushing techniques during delivery.

In France there is also a bigger role for midwives (sage femme in French, which means "wise women") compared to Shanghai. Expectant mothers here can choose their midwife, who are present throughout their entire pregnancy as well as during delivery.

I also had lessons with a physiotherapist to train my vaginal muscles. The exercise requires placing a balloon inside of myself, pumping it full of air and then pulling it out to simulate the birth process. It's very useful, but certainly not offered in Shanghai, where many vain local women are petrified about "stretching themselves out."

The money spent on maternity care in Paris is not higher than in Shanghai. Public maternity hospitals in Shanghai are famously affordable; I purchased a prenatal package at a private clinic in Shanghai for only 15,000 yuan ($2,271.07) and received nice service.

In France, both ob-gyn and ultrasound checks cost 100 euros ($118.71) each, yet 70 percent of it is paid back by public health insurance, even for Chinese immigrants such as myself. France has one of the most affordable and renowned public health care systems in the world, based on a social insurance model, as championed by American filmmaker Michael Moore in his 2007 documentary Sicko.

Indeed, the French medical care system is top-notch, not to mention all the free benefits new families here receive from the government, including a 900-euro birth bonus (prime de naissance). But if I had to choose, I'd prefer giving birth in Shanghai. I'm used to the Chinese style of prenatal care, and there are also no language or cultural barriers for me there. I'll let you know how my one-month of zuoyuezi (postpartum confinement) in Paris goes.
