John Harold Armstrong, Canada

Every foreign visitor who stays in Shanghai for any significant length of time should learn some Shanghai dialect. It may be an obscure and difficult dialect to master, but its assistance in unlocking the city's treasures and opening up meaningful relationships with local residents is undeniable.

我觉着吧,每一个在上海呆得时间长一点儿的老外,都应该学学上海话。上海话是挺难学的,但无疑,这能让你在这座城市开挂般地“芝麻开门”,并与当地的小伙伴建立更亲密的关系呢。

Without an incredibly tolerant and patient Shanghai dialect-speaking spouse or partner, or at the very least some in-laws, no foreigner will ever know the joy of arguing with native vendors and haggling down prices for fresh vegetables on the strength of a few words. But one can and should at least be able to ask and give directions, answer yes or no, respond to simple queries and manage the few daily courtesies that life here demands in dialect.

哎,如果你没能和一个宽容又nice的上海人结婚或者共事,或者没有“老上海”的岳父母/公婆,你可就感受不到和街头卖菜小摊贩用上海话讨价还价的乐趣了呀。好吧,即使你没有这样的上海亲友,但至少学学问路指路、日常问候、回答“是”或“不是”及一些简单问题……这点最基本的方言,掌握也是应该的。

Learning Putonghua is hard enough, and most foreigners consider it a more useful and portable skill to have in their portfolio than Shanghai dialect. The reasons for shirking this second language among second languages are many and valid.

好吧,普通话已经蛮难了,不少老外也觉得普通话比上海话更实用。不学普通话的确说不过去,可除了普通话外,凭什么就非得学上海话呢?理由和借口可以找几百个嗯。

Even finding native speakers under retirement age can sometimes be a challenge, as many local parents have discouraged their children from speaking the dialect at home in favor of becoming proficient in Putonghua (the common tongue and English for later study and career advancement).

甚至啊,你要找个会说上海话的年轻人(至少还没到退休年龄的),都挺不容易的。很多上海家长都不鼓励孩子说方言,好让他们更多地锻炼说普通话(先把普通话给整标准了,再来捯饬英语,以助力今后的学业事业)。

The younger generation of adults in Shanghai are also increasingly hailing from all over the country. Many speak at least two foreign languages, have multiple degrees combined with interesting life experience abroad and are working on deeply personal projects or their own start-ups. Even the hedge-fund hotshots and insurance power players I've met here seem to have a side-hustle involving animal rescue or building libraries in undeveloped regions.

此外,魔都新一代的年轻人也不仅局限于上海,他们来自全国各地。很多人会至少两门外语,有多个学历,以及在国外生活的有趣经历,如今在公司的各项目里发挥光热,甚至开创了自己的事业。我所知道的一些金融保险领域的行家,就还同时在完全迥异的领域里贡献能量,比如救助小动物,或是在偏远地区建图书馆。

But is this relatively wealthy, traveled and highly motivated generation really representative of the true lifeblood of Shanghai? Over time, I've found that it is the older, Shanghai dialect-speaking demographic who often have the most interesting stories and passion for the city's history; a culture that has absorbed over the centuries a perfect mix of foreign and Chinese values.

但是,这相对富有、履历丰富、充满热情的年轻一代,真的能代表上海最原本的血脉吗?我渐渐发现,反倒是说着上海话的老一辈人各自身怀精彩故事,对这座城市的过往今来也有着更深的感情。同样地,这种将中外理念兼收并蓄、数百年来交融传承的文化特色,才是上海真正的风骨。

My conversations with these elder personalities usually start in Shanghai dialect, but due to my limitations quickly jump to broken Putonghua. Nevertheless my Shanghai dialect (with its misplaced tones and funny syntax) never fails to elicit snorts of genuine warmth and amusement from native speakers.

和这些老一辈聊天,我通常都是用上海话起头的。虽然我会的上海话实在太少,撑不了几句就转换为烂烂的普通话了。但是,只要我一说上海话(虽然发音和语法漏洞百出),每次都得到本地人开心又热情的回应呢!

Is there really any better way to approach the heart of this vibrant and overwhelming city than beginning with its own native language? Over the years I've discovered that Chinese are just far too polite to directly criticize one's limited language skills. Friends still praise my horrible tones and ignore my blatant and obvious errors of speech. The more flowery the lauding of a particular interaction, the more depressed I become about my fluency.

是啊,想要走进这座活力满满、意象纷繁的城市的内心,没有什么比学说这里的方言更管用的了。来这里这么多年了,我发现中国人有时也太客气了——哪怕你中文说得再烂,他们都不会批评指责。我自己的发音和语法就有许多毛病,但朋友们不仅选择无视,反而对我各种赞许表扬。有时候,对方越称赞我,我反倒对自己的中文越沮丧了。

When speaking Shanghai dialect, there is a certain relaxation of social formality. Locals are so interested to hear a foreigner speaking their dialect that they forget to shelve their curiosity. Any attempt to speak in Shanghai dialect immediately results in an impromptu language session with my new tutor eager to teach me slang or naughty phrases. Our intrepid neighborhood guard and resident gossip-hound "Little Turtle" has taken me under his wing.

当你说上海话时,会觉得和人交流起来都没那么拘谨了呢。听到一枚歪果仁说上海话,本地人都觉得蛮好玩的,连好奇心都懒得收起来端着了。只要一说上海话,对方可能就会很兴奋地即兴教你几句地道的俏皮话啥的。比方说哈,我们小区的保安兼邻里八卦情报员“小龟龟”就已经收我为徒了。(翻译君还以为这个“little turtle”在这有什么hint,结果人家说这就是他的名字而已……

Each language lesson begins with Little Turtle opening all the buttons of his shirt so that he may take full advantage of the sun's rays on his highly polished mahogany cask of a belly. "sanliang noodles at lunch. Special order." Thus we begin.

看吧,小龟龟同志把他的T恤撩上去卷到腋下(标准的老大爷造型 ,让太阳晒在他油光发亮的肚皮上,我们的方言课就开始啦:“午饭三两面,按要求下~”

My formal Putonghua teacher at a renowned city university despairs such street-corner lessons and worries that Little Turtle is teaching me all sorts of incorrect grammar and "wrong" ways of speaking. She frets that all this experimenting with Shanghai dialect will set back my Putonghua learning and possibly cause me to do poorly on my looming HSK tests.

我正式的普通话老师是一位知名的大学老师。对于这种不入眼的街头“课堂”,她挺看不上的,也担忧小龟龟毫不正规的语法和表达会把我给教错了。我在这学上海话学得这么起劲,会不会影响到普通话的学习?会不会让我连HSK汉语考试都考不好了?老师表示十分焦虑。

Between you and me, however, it's well worth the numerical risks, as the rewards of interacting with locals in true Shanghai dialect are simply too rich to pass up. Try it!

可是啊,我依然觉得和一个地方的人交往,能用他们最地道的方言沟通才是最美好的。你如果不试试说上海话,你永远感受不到对方听到ta的方言从你口中冒出时的那份惊喜。学上海话的好处多多,为何要轻易放弃呢?不妨试试吧!
